During the warm summer months, British Columbians get out on the water and enjoy boating. Most boaters practice safe boating but those who don’t can cause potentially deadly accidents. Hundreds of people die every year in boating accidents across Canada, and hundreds more are hospitalized with serious injuries.
Similar to motor vehicles, boats are governed by regulations. The Competency of Operators of Pleasure Craft Regulations includes speed limits, rights of way, lights and signs. The operator of a power boat is also required to have proof of competency and proof of age on board at all times. Those who do not may be subject to strict penalties.
